I don't know if this can be done or how early in the boot process it
can be done (perhaps a little chatter is OK), but can you redirect the
chatter to /dev/tty2 (Alt+F2 to view it)?  If so then you can display
the image on /dev/tty1 while the chatter is sent elsewhere....
