Recently I've been looking for a very small, low-power PC
that can be used as a PDA but still run linux with a
full command-line development environment (I use several
different compilers, and makefiles) and standard
binaries.
It needs to be fanless, sealed from dust, fairly durable,
and have a long battery life. It also needs to pack at
least 256M of memory and some kind of disk with at least
12GBytes of storage. And it needs to support an actual
non-chicklet keyboard (PS2 jack or USB), network plug
and wireless networking card on different devices/IP
addresses. A floppy, DVD, and/or CD-rom, or at least
memory stick slot, would be nice but it's not strictly
necessary. A parallel port would be needed if it has none
of those things though.
I don't care about xwindows and don't need a mouse or a camera
or speakers, but it should have microphone and headphone jacks
and a sound system that linux understands. If it runs at
least 300Mhz with a pentium-2 instruction set or better I'll
be okay with the speed.
In an ideal universe, it would have two battery slots, so
that you can change them out one at a time without powering
down. If that's not possible, it needs at least 5-6 hours
worth of battery life and a 12volt adapter so it can be
run on an automotive 12volt system.
Does anybody know what machine I'm talking about? I have
to admit to a certain degree of bafflement as I've tried
to find it.
