In today's Chron. one the inside page of the Business section, after the 
article about "AT&T rewrites rules: Your Data isn't yours" was an 
interesting short article titled "On line marketing chief quits Microsoft".
   MS corp. said Martin Taylor, a former assistant to Chief Exec. 
Officer Steve Ballmer who was promoted to vice president in March to 
lead the software giant's fight against on line rivals, has left the 
company.
   "We've made the difficult decision to part ways with Martin Taylor 
but we don't comment on personnel matters," the company said in an 
e-mailed statement that didn't disclose the reason for his departure.
   Taylor is credited with helping MS beat back the threat posed by the 
free Linux operating system when he was head of platform strategy with 
the Windows group. His exit leaves Microsoft searching for a new expert 
to revamp marketing for the MSN Web sites and Windows Live services.

Prior to working on Windows Live and MSN marketing, Taylor led the 
company's efforts to battle open-source competitors, who believe that 
source code should be freely shared. Microsoft believes such software 
blueprints should be closely guarded.
   Taylor had been with Microsoft for 13 years.

hmmmm, maybe he fought well. But apparently MS didn't believe he won the 
battle.
