Anyway...you shouldn't overlook the oft-overlooked Xpaint.  While it's
definitely not The GIMP, it's surprisingly sophisticated.  Yes, it has
a boring generic name and uses an antiqued widget set and generally
sounds like it would be about as exciting as a four-function
calculator, but it actually has a pretty impressive set of features
(although they're not all obvious from a quick glance).
