Raj,
I recently began switching our office over to Debian/Ubuntu AMD64 and so
far have only noticed overall performance gain. Several of the now
64bit servers are hosting VMware Server 1.04 which is a 32-bit
application. The VM themselves are not individually running any faster
but as a group the host OS is more efficient.
I recommend examining your 32bit application's leading stress points
such as CPU, memory, and disk IO usage. Also make sure you load the
ia32-libs for any 32bit software needs.
