This is something I've always tried to emphasize when promoting Linux
and open source (e.g., when doing hands-on public demos of Linux with my
Linux User Group out here in Davis).

I don't have it handy, but I used to have a picture-filled handout that
showed all the different uses of Linux, including some snapshots from
famous movies where Linux-based systems were used for 3D rendering and/or
editing.  ('Shrek,' for example.)

Robots, VOiP office phones, PDAs, a cluster of Google servers, etc. etc...


Also, a number of years ago I ran a little survey with LUGOD members to
try and get an idea of the variety of things they use Linux for, and
then turned that into a little hand-out:
