See, I encountered gopher before the Web.  For me it was a somewhat
familiar UI because I had used menu-based BBSes a fair bit (though I was
more fond of Citadels).  It was still a bit frustrating and I tended to
just use archie and ftp to find things instead.

That said, the local library's gopher service was a great way to get
free Internet access just by breaking out to a telnet link.
