Ok just solved the problem.
It turns out I had to download the 1000bgn microcode from
http://intellinuxwireless.org/?n=Downloads, extract it and copy it to
/lib/firmware/. Should've done more research and tried it before
posting. Oh well, if anyone else runs into similar issues, i hope
this post will help them.
When in doubt, by the way, see what happens when you run "dhclient"
from the command line (as the root user, obviously). If nothing else,
it might give you useful diagnostics.
Looks like the necessary driver is named iwlwifi (do "lsmod | grep
iwlwifi"), and it's been in the upstream kernel tree since 2.6.24.
