Presentation:
"Taming a dinosaur with Docker and JavaScript"
Presented by:
Dennis Stevense, Lead Software Engineer, Digital Deployment
Description:
Open source software can be used in various ways, and 'old' and 'new'
can be used together. This talk will discuss maintaining a Drupal
6-based codebase -- long after the releases of Drupal 7 (2011) and
Drupal 8 (2015), and the recent 'end-of-life' of Drupal 6 (early 2016)
-- with the help of Docker and JavaScript.
Drupal is an open source content-management framework, written in
PHP, and used for things ranging from blogs to corporate, political,
and government websites; it's also used for 'knowledge management'
and business collaboration. Interest in Drupal was boosted when it
was used by the Howard Dean campaign during the 2004 presidential
election. Today, there are over 35,000 free add-on modules, and
over 2,000 free themes, available for Drupal. [Wikipedia] There's an
active Drupal User Group in Sacramento, which also helps put together
a Sacramento "DrupalCamp", one of many global Drupal conferences.
Docker is a 'containerization' platform, allowing you to wrap a piece
of software in a complete filesystem that contains everything needed
to run code; guaranteeing the software will always run the same,
regardless of its environment.
About the Speaker:
Dennis Stevense is Lead Software Engineer at Digital Deployment,
responsible for managing the development team, and planning ongoing
development of their platform.

Hello,
in May 2015 Berlin's Linux user group (BeLUG) has started a new type of event
which has spread quickly all over Europe: the Linux Presentation Day (LPD)
2015.1: Berlin only
2016.1 & 2016.2: 120+ cities in 15 countries
2017.1: first locations outside Europe (Canada, New Zealand, probably more)
I contact you because we intend to expand the LPD beyond Europe next year.
The aim of the LPD towards the general public is to provide biannual and
comprehensive information events about Linux for private users who would like
to get a first impression of Linux.
The aim towards the media is to make the event so big (both nationally and
internationally) that the nationwide non-IT media cover it regularly.
The aim towards the Linux community is that an LPD event can be so small and
easy to organize (even without costs) that really everyone can try to organize
an event with good chances of success. The local organizers decide on their
own what their event shall be like; we just make suggestions and offer
support.
You can find a longer description of the concept here:
http://www.linux-presentation-day.org/idea/
Are you as an organization interested in participating in the LPD? If not: Are
any of your members interested in helping us bring the LPD to the US?
This event is very useful for finding new LUG members.
Best regards,
(Mr.) Hauke Laging

Michael Paoli (Michael.Paoli at cal.berkeley.edu) wrote at [1]:
~~~~~~~~~~~~ quoting ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've got multiple titles (including several recently received) to give
away to user groups. I'll do my more-or-less usual one title per each
user group I typically go to - at least until each user group has had at
least one opportunity to get a title.
I may not schlep all physical titles to all meetings, so depending what
relevant responses I see in email on the applicable user group list(s)
(and emailing me and not to any relevant list doesn't count) before I
head out the door from home directly or indirectly (e.g. via work) to
those meetings, or if I see nothing relevant by then on list for group
I'll be heading to, I'll randomly select ... anyway, based upon
whichever, I'll typically bring at least two physical titles with me
and up to a max of perhaps as many as 4, to each of those meetings.
"Must be present to win" - I'm not going to hold books for people that
don't make it to meetings - especially while denying said book(s) to
those that do make it to meetings - so don't ask. So, if you want to
get hold of one of these titles, from me, you need to actually make it
to a meeting.
Details, more information, etc., see:[2]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Am wondering HOW MANY copies are still available of each of
the titles listed there[2] ??
E.g., only ONE copy of all book titles (n=1), title(s) of
ONE copy available + title(s) of TWO or more copies available
(n=1 + n=2 ...), even multiple copies of ALL titles ??
Am particularly interested in Wicked Cool Shell Scripts, 2nd Edition,
but I see from [3] that someone is already keenly interested in this
title for the Thursday 2016-12-01 mtg of that group.
Any chance that a SECOND copy of this very title is available for
another "user group [you] typically go to", e.g., BALUG ??
Doesn't hurt to ask...
TY,
-A
