The Linux Users' Group of Davis (LUGOD) will be holding the following meeting:
Monday

7:00pm - 9:00pm
Presentation:
"Configuration Management with Puppet: Present and Future"
presented by Greg Larkin, Puppet Labs
In this talk, Greg Larkin, an engineer with Puppet Labs, will discuss
some of the historical issues with system management, how Puppet
works, how it fits into current types of infrastructure deployments
and what some of its enterprise …
[View More]features are. The talk will touch
on high-level concepts as well as show some code and how it enforces
node configurations. The talk will also cover new Puppet developments
that were recently announced during PuppetConf 2015.
About Puppet:
Puppet is an open-source configuration management tool. It runs on
many Unix-like systems as well as on Microsoft Windows, and includes
its own declarative language to describe system configuration.
Puppet is produced by Puppet Labs. It is written in Ruby and released
as free software -- under the GNU General Public License (GPL) until
version 2.7.0, and the Apache License 2.0 after that.
About the Speaker:
Greg Larkin is a Professional Services Engineer at Puppet Labs.
He has worked as a software developer since the 1980s. In the mid-90s,
acting as a self-employed software development consultant, he became
involved with many teams of geographically-distributed independent
consultants, and began setting up source code control repositories for
these teams. Out of this, SourceHosting.net, the first Internet-based
hosted source code repository service, was born.
After discovering Puppet in 2012, Greg launched Devopsify IT!, a
consulting business focused on assisting and mentoring clients with
their first steps towards a more automated and reliable deployment
architecture.
About Puppet Labs:
Founded by Luke Kanies in 2005, Puppet Labs is the leader in IT
automation. Their software helps sysadmins automate configuration
and management of machines and the software running on them.
With their software, businesses can make rapid, repeatable changes
and automatically enforce the consistency of systems and devices,
across physical and virtual machines, on-premises or in the cloud.
Tens of thousands of the world's leading companies (including Bank
of America, Cisco, the New York Stock Exchange, and salesforce.com)
use Puppet to manage millions of machines and devices.
Based in Portland, Oregon, Puppet Labs employs more than 400 people.

Hi guys, I noticed this agenda item for today's SF Board of
Supervisors meeting. Seems like they've been asked to kick down an
additional 10 million bucks, on top of the 5 million already paid, for
more Oracle licenses. Is anyone in the know about this, or planning to
attend the meeting?

Books[1], etc. for ...
I've got 5 new titles I received 2016-03-03 (only qty. 1 or 2 of each)
plus only two remaining titles I received earlier (and only qty. 1 of
each of those remain).
If you are or may be interested, see: [1]
This upcoming week I'll be attending:
Berkeley Linux Users Group (BerkeleyLUG) [2]
Bay Area Linux Users Group (BALUG) [3]
Berkeley Unix User Group (BUUG) [4]
I'm not planning to schelp all 6 physical titles
with me to each of these meetings, so depending what relevant …
[View More]responses
I see in email on the applicable user group list(s) (and emailing me and
not to any relevant list doesn't count) before I head out the door from
home directly or indirectly (e.g. via work) to those meetings,
or if I see nothing relevant by then on list for group I'll be heading
to, I'll randomly select ... anyway, based upon whichever, I'll bring at
least two physical titles with me, and up to a max of perhaps as many as
4, to each of those meetings.
"Must be present to win" - I'm not going to hold books for people that
don't make it to meetings - especially while denying said book(s) to
those that do make it to meetings - so don't ask. So, if you want to
get hold of one of these titles, from me, you need to actually make it
to a meeting.
If you don't manage to catch me at one of the shortly upcoming meetings
mentioned above, there are will remain some additional future
opportunities to potentially get such a title for yourself from me at
some other future meeting - see [1] (and that wiki page is generally
update to reflect what remaining titles I still have copy(/ies) of).

And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, slouches towards
San Francisco to be reborn? Why, it's Smalltalk!
Event is in SoMa (Howard between 6th and 7th), it's free, and looks very
worthwhile. FYI, this will be on a Sunday. Talks run 9am-5pm.

BALUG backup of mysql database for transfer ...
So, BALUG has some old content in mysql database (PostNuke - MySQL +
PHP) hosted on DreamHost, and we're moving away from DreamHost hosting.
So, recommendations on best ways to save any and all of that mysql data
content, for later examination/restoration/extraction, etc.? Not that
we're planning to ever, at least "permanently" run PostNuke again, but
on our "todo" list includes archive preservation/restoration, and that
would be one of those …
[View More]pieces (does hold a fair chunk of older BALUG
history - some years of wiki/forum/blog type stuff in addition to web
content).
So far, I've basically done:
$ (umask 077 && mysqldump --all-databases --host HOST --user USER
--password > mysqldump.out 2>mysqldump.err)
$ (umask 077 && mysqldump --skip-opt --all-databases --host HOST
--user USER --password > mysqldump--skip-opt.out 2>mysqldump.err)
Each time, above, no error output (just an empty resultant mysqldump.err
file). And the files / amount of data isn't very large at all:
$ ls -onstr *.out
1532 -rw------- 1 1690893 1566321 Mar 9 05:39 mysqldump.out
2492 -rw------- 1 1690893 2547875 Mar 9 05:46 mysqldump--skip-opt.out
$
So, ... thoughts/comments/suggestions/recommendations on manner of
saving that mysql data - at least in some reasonable form we may hope
to do something useful with it in future? (most notably at some point
restore enough of it to extract and preserve the PostNuke content)
