Sandstorm is an open source package manager for web apps, and it runs on
Linux systems. It makes it easy to start up Etherpad (or any other packaged
app) with a click. You can read more + try the demo here:

Security-wise, it takes the Google Docs sharing model and applies it to
entire app instances, resulting in web apps that are private by default,
insulating you from app bugs. Usability-wise, it takes 120 seconds to
install and automatically updates itself.

This meetup features a talk about the Sandstorm app permissions & sharing
model (which for security nerds, is based on object-capability security) by
David Renshaw. There are also and a hands-on session to see how to install
Sandstorm on a server, and a hands-on session on how to package apps for
it. Any web app that runs on Linux can work on Sandstorm.

Systemd: The Modern Linux init System You Will Learn to Love
presented by Alison Chaiken
The controversial "systemd" -- a suite of system management daemons,
libraries, and utilities designed as a central management and
configuration platform for the Linux computer operating system --
has absorbed "udev", and purported to replace "syslog" with the
"journal" daemon.
Recent decisions by Debian and Ubuntu to adopt "systemd" assure its
prominence as a Linux init system. Users and sysadmins are predictably
horrified. In fact, "systemd" is winning wide acceptance, our speaker
says, because it is simpler, easier to use, and better documented than
its competition. Alison Chaiken will describe how to get started with
systemd, discuss some problems with it, and perform some simple demos.
About the speaker:
Alison Chaiken is a senior software engineer at the Embedded
Software Division of Mentor Graphics, working in embedded Linux and
middleware. She was in the recent past a MeeGo Technical Consultant
at Nokia Mobility Solutions, and describes herself as 'a recovering
physicist', who has computed primarily on Unix since the days of the
VAX 11/750. Before her work at Nokia, she worked on pervasive computing
projects at HP Labs, then moved to Stanford Linear Accelerator Center
to write instrument control and user interface software.

Hi everyone,
I wanted to let you know that coming up on Wednesday May 13th, Ubuntu
California and Bay Area Debian are having back to back events.
First we'll meet at Starbucks at 74 New Montgomery St at 6PM for an

Then at 7, to arrive by 7:10, several of us are going over to Henry's
Hunan at 110 Natoma St. (SOMA location) just a couple blocks away for

KDE Connect

"KDE Connect" is a project that aims to let your different devices
communicate with each other. For example, can receive your phone
notifications on your computer, use your phone as a remote control
for your desktop, easily share photos and other files between devices
(without using cables!), and more.
To achieve all this, KDE Connect implements a secure communication
protocol over the network, and allows any developer to create plugins
on top of it. Currently there are KDE Connect clients on the KDE
desktop for Linux, Android and and Blackberry devices (with support
for iPhone coming soon).
