Forwarding from Nathan Handler's attempted posting to balug-announce.
As mentioned on the listinfo page
(http://lists.balug.org/listinfo.cgi/balug-announce-balug.org),
balug-announce is 'restricted to Bay Area Linux Users Group (BALUG)'s
own announcements to its members'. (So, don't do that please, Nathan.)
By the way, it's better to avoid CCing multiple mailing lists, as doing
so causes a variety of problems for listadmins.

PlayOnLinux: a graphical front-end to Wine
presented by Ronin Dusette
PlayOnLinux <https://www.playonlinux.com/> is a piece of software
which allows you to easily install and use numerous games and apps
designed to run with Microsoft Windows. A minority of commercial
games are compatible with Linux at the moment, which can be a factor
that prevents some users from migrating to it. PlayOnLinux brings
a cost-free, accessible and efficient solution to this problem.
Written in Bash shell and Python, and using wxPython of its
interface, PlayOnLinux is graphical front-end to Wine, an open source
"compatibility layer" capable of running Windows applications on
Linux, Mac OS X and BSD. Wine translates Windows API calls, which
eliminates the performance and memory penalties of other methods.
This means you do not need to own a Windows license to use
PlayOnLinux!
About the speaker:
Ronin Dusette is a web developer/designer, photographer, technical
consultant and musician, as well as a member of the PlayOnLinux team.

craigslist is pleased to host Larry Wall Presents: Perl 6!
Perl 6 has been a long time coming—some might say too long—but now
here it is, and it's pretty sweet. Perl 6 corrects some of the flaws
in the Perl 5 design, but in doing so it also corrects many of the
flaws in other popular dynamic languages. It does this through a
balanced, multi-paradigmatic approach, combining the best of
functional programming, object-oriented programming, meta-programming,
and reactive programming. It is also a language that is designed from
the ground up to evolve gracefully, to grow with you as you grow. It's
also still fun. Come and find out what your future self might think
about Perl 6.

Cross compiling to 6502 8-bit systems with 'cc65'
presented by Bill Kendrick, New Breed Software
cc65 is a complete cross development package for 6502 & 65C02 systems,
including a powerful macro assembler, a C compiler, linker, librarian
and several other tools. cc65 has C and runtime library support for
Commodores (VIC20, C16, Plus/4, 64, 128 and more), Apple (II+ and later),
Atari 8-bits (400/800/XL/XE computers and 5200 game console),
Nintendo Entertainment System game console, and Atari Lynx handheld
game system.
cc65 started out as a C compiler adapted for the Atari 8-bit line of
computers in the late 1980s. In 1999 it was adapted to run on modern
systems, with the original goal of creating a C compiler for Commodore
computers. Today it is open source (zlib license) and officially
supports Linux, Windows, MSDOS and OS/2, but is highly portable.
In this talk, Bill will discuss the cc65 basics that he's learned
(slowly, in the two years since LUGOD's "Vintage Computers and Linux
roundtable" meeting), specifically related to using cc65 to produce
software on the powerful Atari computer series.
Topics will include: disk image creation and testing via an emulator,
memory management, redefined character sets (fonts and tile graphics),
direct access to hardware registers (custom chipset),
Vertical Blank Interrupts (VBI) and Display List Interrupts (DLI) in
C for graphics and other uses, and more.
About the speaker:
Bill Kendrick has owned Atari 8-bit computers since his childhood,
and still occasionally writes software (mostly games) for the system,
usually in TurboBASIC XL (an ehnancement over Atari's own BASIC)
or Action!, a high-level language with a one-pass compiler.

Explorit Nature Center
3141 5th Street
Davis, CA 95616

Presentation:
The Dark Art of Container Monitoring
presented by Gianluca Borello, Sr. Engineer, sysdig cloud
Containers are revolutionizing the way we deploy and maintain our
infrastructures, but monitoring and troubleshooting in a containerized
environment can still be painful and impractical. Understanding
even basic resource usage is difficult - let alone tracking network
connections or malicious activity. This talk will cover the current
state of the art for container monitoring and visibility, including
pros / cons and live demonstrations of each method. Special emphasis will
be put on sysdig, an open source troubleshooting tool the presenter
has helped develop. Sysdig offers unprecedented container visibility
without the need to break the 'sanctity' of the container.
About Sysdig:
Sysdig is the container visibility company, dedicated to making
containers viable and mainstream by offering production-quality
visibility into containerized applications, without sacrificing any
of the benefits that make containers great. Sysdig is creating a new
generation of 'container-native' performance management solutions,
designed specifically to deliver monitoring in a microservices-friendly
architecture. Founded in 2013 by Loris Degioanni, the company's open
source sysdig technology has attracted a community of hundreds of
thousands of developers, administrators and other IT professionals
looking for deep visibility into systems and containers.
Sysdig's commercial product, Sysdig Cloud, is the first and only
comprehensive, container-native monitoring, alerting and troubleshooting
platform.
About the speaker:
Gianluca Borello is a Senior Engineer at Sysdig Cloud, where he wears
many hats. He's a core developer of the sysdig troubleshooting tool,
and spends his days dealing with backend development, performance
analysis and cloud infrastructures management. Prior to Sysdig,
he worked at Riverbed and CACE Technologies, the company behind
Wireshark. He's passionate about Linux, open source technologies and
distributed systems at scale. He holds a MS in Computer Engineering
from Politecnico di Torino, Italy.

Hello BALUG friends,
Just a quick note to say that we've decided to sync up our monthly San
Francisco Ubuntu Hour with the 2nd Wednesday of the month date of the
Bay Area Debian Meeting, to offer an evening of Ubuntu and Debian
camaraderie!
So this upcoming Wednesday, July 8th, the plan is as follows:
First, from 6-7PM:
San Francisco Ubuntu Hour
Location: Starbucks, 74 New Montgomery Street, San Francisco
Details: http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/ubuntu-california/3157-ubuntu-hour-san-franci…
We a signed copy of A Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux available and a
copy of Ubuntu Unleashed 2015 for a couple lucky attendees.
Then, from 7:10 onward many of us will go to the nearby...
Bay Area Debian Dinner
Location: Henry's Hunan Restaurant, 110 Natoma St., San Francisco
Details: http://bad.debian.net/pipermail/bad/2015-July/003694.html
So come out to the Ubuntu Hour or join us for dinner at the Bay Area
Debian Meeting, or both!
To find us at both events, look for the people in the Linux shirts and
the Jessie (cowgirl) and Stretch (purple octopus) stuffed toys. At
both events we should have signs up on or near our table as well.
Feel free to contact me directly or on list if you have any questions
about either event. Hope to see you there!

Some MySQL tricks -- an open discussion
presented by Bill Kendrick, CTO, Smashwords, Inc.
MySQL is the world's most widely used open source relational database
management system (RDBMS), and second most used of all RDBMSes, after
Oracle. Over the years at Smashwords, we've come up with a number of
methods to help address performance problems, including materialized
views, caching, slave databases, denormalization, historical tables,
and more.
This talk will briefly discuss some of these things, but since MySQL
is 20 years old, and SQL in general first appeared over 40 years ago,
the topic is quite large. Therefore, this meeting will be held as an
open discussion, with the audience invited to share their thoughts
and experience on the subject!
About the speaker:
Bill Kendrick is CTO of Smashwords, Inc. an online ebook publishing
and distribution service. He spends a lot of his time at the mysql>
prompt, but makes no claim at expertise.
About Smashwords:
Launched in 2008, Smashwords is a self-serve system where independent
authors, publishers, and literary agents alike upload and manage their
ebooks, which are sold at the Smashwords website, and distributed to
numerous online retailers, including Apple iBooks Store, Barnes and
Noble, Kobo, Oyster, Scribd, OverDrive, and more.
