The Linux Users' Group of Davis (LUGOD) will be holding the following meeting: Monday October 17, 2016 7:00pm - 9:00pm Presentation: "Surveillance: self-defense and how you can push back" Presented by: The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF): Shahid Buttar, Director of Grassroots Advocacy; Amul Kalia, Intake Coordinator; and Camille Ochoa, Operations Assistant Description: Law-abiding Americans are increasingly subject to routine surveillance, not only by federal intelligence agencies -- which will confront a critical legislative deadline in 2017 -- but also by local law enforcement agencies like police departments, and sheriff's offices, as well as private sector sources such as social media networks, employers, and ISPs. Learn how to use a few simple-yet-powerful tools to defend your privacy from electronic monitoring, while also exploring how policy reform opportunities present a chance for your community to increase transparency and introduce long overdue checks & balances. Participants need not wield technical expertise to attend this session, which is geared towards regular smartphone and laptop users. It will include a teach-in and skill-share on surveillance, some immediate and practical steps you can take to protect your communications, and how to work with neighbors to inform surveillance policy at the state and local level. About the Speakers: Shahid Buttar leads EFF's grassroots and student outreach efforts. He's a constitutional lawyer focused on the intersection of community organizing and policy reform as a lever to shift legal norms, with roots in communities across the country resisting mass surveillance. Amul Kalia helps EFF staff spot opportunities where it would be helpful for the organization to add its voice. He mostly works with EFF's attorneys in keeping a pulse on emerging legal digital rights issues, and finding opportunities for the EFF to get involved. Camille Ochoa provides general operational support to the heroes of EFF. She has her BA in Societal Communication. As the pressure to fill these IT job roles increases to keep pace with demand, so too does the competition to land one of these lucrative opportunities. Having strong open source and career navigation skills has never been more important. But it can be overwhelming when you are trying to figure out how to get started. Come find out about open source career trends and how to leverage them, how to start getting involved in open source projects even if you aren't a coder, why networking isn't as scary as it seems and other tricks to help you achieve your career goals in open source. About the Speaker: Emily Kurze is currently the Marketing Programs Manager at The Linux Foundation. Needed: 64-bit machines, monitors, USB keyboards, USB optical mice

Hi, Partimus is placing Lubuntu machines in low income shelters in San Francisco. We are looking for 64-bit machines for this purpose. They will just be desktops, but we know that the end of 32-bit is coming, and so we want to deploy all of our remaining 32-bit machines and then start transitioning to 64-bit only. We also need USB keyboards (only) and USB optical mice only. Also, any flat screen monitors would be welcome. We would like to pick up lots of at least 5, as opposed to onesies and twosies. And ... at present, looks like the list archives may be working again. The Linux Users' Group of Davis (LUGOD) will be holding the following meeting: Monday July 18, 2016 7:00pm - 9:00pm Presentation: The Center for Integrated Computing and STEM Education (The C-STEM Center) presented by Professor Harry H. Cheng, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, UC Davis C-STEM, "Computing, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics", <http://c-stem.ucdavis.edu/about-us/> is a UC Approved Educational Preparation Program for Undergraduate Admission for all University of California campuses. Participation in the C-STEM program is recognized in the UC admissions process as achievements that have explicitly prepared students for college and career. UC Davis recently launched a new national program for school districts across the country that will make it easier for students to have computer science educations starting in first grade. This new curriculum provides students with a full first-grade-to-high-school curriculum that includes mathematics from the Center for Integrated Computing and STEM Education at UC Davis (the C-STEM Center). The C-STEM Center, founded by Professor Harry Cheng in 2010, aims to transform C-STEM education in both formal and informal K-14 programs through integrated learning, guided by two key objectives: (1) close the achievement gap by broadening participation of students traditionally underrepresented in computing and STEM related careers and post-secondary study, and (2) develop students' 21st century problem-solving skills to tackle real world concerns through integrated computing and STEM education. The center's vision is to provide formal computing education for all K-12 students. The C-STEM ICT (information and communications technology) Pathway will provide K-12 students with 12 years of computer science education through hands-on integrated learning of math and computer science with coding in the C and C++ languages, and Blockly, a client-side JavaScript library for creating visual block programming editors which run in a web browser (an open source project of Google, and which resembles Scratch). The C-STEM Center can provide two-day training academies and weeklong institutes in using the curriculum in the classroom for teachers who have no prior computer programming and robotics experience. About the Speaker: Dr. Harry Cheng <http://faculty.engineering.ucdavis.edu/cheng/> is a professor at UC Davis' Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and is founder and director of the C-STEM Center. In 2006, he found that few students in his freshman computer programming course had prior experience in the subject. Red Hat Inc. and DevNation are holding this year's Red Hat Summit at SF's Moscone Center this Monday thru Wednesday, June 27th thru June 29th, see [1] and [2]. Of course that's less than a handful of blocks from BALUG's own monthly meeting venue [3]. For reference purposes, the most current RH Rates and locations page [4] lists full conference passes in the *VERY* high triple-digits, as in $950+ ! Probably unlikely by this point, but does anyone here know where one could still score a $0.00 Free-as-in-Beer Exhibitions Only-type pass/entry-code to this event or at least an onsite pass/entry-code in the *VERY* low double-digits??
