Farewell BALUG!

BALUG friends & acquaintances, it's with mixed emotion that I say farewell! My family and I are moving up to Washington state this summer, after ~20 years out here in Davis. We'll be close to our kids' grandparents, finally own our own house, and won't have 105F days during summer! :) I'll be unsubscribing from various local mailing lists soon. I'm sure I'll see at least some of you around online, though. (And nostalgia won't let me unsubscribe from LUGOD's mailing lists. ;) ) -- -bill! Sent from my computer

The Linux Users' Group of Davis (LUGOD) will be holding the following meeting: Monday May 15, 2017 7:00pm - 9:00pm Presentation: "DockerCon17 Recap and Highlights" Presented by: Stephen Matthew Helms Description: Docker is an open-source project that automates the deployment of applications inside software containers -- a server virtualization method in which the kernel of an operating system allows the existence of multiple isolated user-space instances, instead of just one. DockerCon, held recently in Austin, Texas, is a "community and container industry conference for makers and operators of next generation distributed apps built with containers ... with talks by practitioners, hands-on labs, an expo hall of Docker ecosystem innovators." This presentation will highlight some of the Linux- and open-source-related topics found at DockerCon 2017. Stephen will also briefly discuss the Docker Community, Mentoring and Higher Ed and Embassador program, and if time permits, audience participation in some demos. The Linux Users' Group of Davis (LUGOD) will be holding the following meeting: Monday March 20, 2017 7:00pm - 9:00pm Presentation: "Kodi media player (formerly XBMC: Xbox Media Center)" Presented by: Ronile Lambert Description: Kodi (formerly known as "XBMC", or "Xbox Media Center") is an award-winning open source media center for playing videos, music, pictures, games, and more. Licensed as free software, under the GNU General Public License (GPL), it runs on Linux, OS X, Windows, iOS, and Android. Kodi features a "10-foot user interface" (that is, a UI suitable for televisions, where the user is 10' away from the screen, and using a hand-held remote control), and can play digital content from local and network storage, as well as streamed from the Internet. It supports live TV, and can act as a Personal Video Recorder (PVR). It supports 'skins', allowing the entire UI to be customized, and 'add-ons' to give Kodi additional functionality (e.g., controlling the lights in your house). Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) support lets Kodi instances stream to each other, and other devices. Along with real remote controls, and iOS and Android remote apps for phones and tablets, Kodi can also be controlled programmatically, via a web interface! Kodi began as XBMC, the Xbox Media Center, for the original Microsoft Xbox game console, but has since been ported to a variety of platforms, and in 2014 the software was renamed to Kodi. A stand-alone Linux distribution "Kodibuntu" (based on Ubuntu) is available, and a number of commercially sold stand-alone devices running XBMC & Kodi have been made. A new OLPC Project in Ethiopia

Greetings! OLPC San Francisco will be hosting our monthly meeting Saturday, March 11th, from 10:30AM - 1PM at the downtown SFSU campus, 835 Market Street, 6th floor, room 609. I am conducting a survey as part of my Master's research project, which focuses on understanding similarities and differences between various groups of technology/cyber enthusiasts. The complexity of Go has made it the subject of Artificial Intelligence (AI) research for decades, but until last year computer Go programs were no match for human intuition. This talk will give a gentle introduction to the machine learning techniques that made the breakthrough possible, along with links and resources to open source machine learning libraries. The Linux Users' Group of Davis (LUGOD) will be holding the following meeting: Monday January 16, 2017 7:00pm - 9:00pm Presentation: "Taming a dinosaur with Docker and JavaScript" Presented by: Dennis Stevense, Lead Software Engineer, Digital Deployment Description: Open source software can be used in various ways, and 'old' and 'new' can be used together. This talk will discuss maintaining a Drupal 6-based codebase -- long after the releases of Drupal 7 (2011) and Drupal 8 (2015), and the recent 'end-of-life' of Drupal 6 (early 2016) -- with the help of Docker and JavaScript. Drupal is an open source content-management framework, written in PHP, and used for things ranging from blogs to corporate, political, and government websites; it's also used for 'knowledge management' and business collaboration. Interest in Drupal was boosted when it was used by the Howard Dean campaign during the 2004 presidential election. Today, there are over 35,000 free add-on modules, and over 2,000 free themes, available for Drupal. [Wikipedia] There's an active Drupal User Group in Sacramento, which also helps put together a Sacramento "DrupalCamp", one of many global Drupal conferences. Docker is a 'containerization' platform, allowing you to wrap a piece of software in a complete filesystem that contains everything needed to run code; guaranteeing the software will always run the same, regardless of its environment. expanding Europe's Linux Presentation Day to the US

Hello, in May 2015 Berlin's Linux user group (BeLUG) has started a new type of event which has spread quickly all over Europe: the Linux Presentation Day (LPD) 2015.1: Berlin only 2016.1 & 2016.2: 120+ cities in 15 countries 2017.1: first locations outside Europe (Canada, New Zealand, probably more) I contact you because we intend to expand the LPD beyond Europe next year. The aim of the LPD towards the general public is to provide biannual and comprehensive information events about Linux for private users who would like to get a first impression of Linux. The aim towards the media is to make the event so big (both nationally and internationally) that the nationwide non-IT media cover it regularly. The aim towards the Linux community is that an LPD event can be so small and easy to organize (even without costs) that really everyone can try to organize an event with good chances of success. The local organizers decide on their own what their event shall be like; we just make suggestions and offer support.
