So I got in touch with Pat McGovern of Splunk re: the upcoming meeting. As it turns out, no one had been in touch with him, so he wasn't confirmed in the least. So... if it's ok, I can probably convince him to give a talk. The other options would be...
1. Rick M., as mentioned previously 2. Doug MacEachern, mod_perl creator, CTO of Hyperic 3. I could probably get one of Larry Augustin, any of the SugarCRM guys, or one of the 6 Apart guys (who are working on some interesting projects)
Let the discussion commence. Do any of you know who originally suggested Pat McGovern? It turns out that he was scheduled to speak in August, but he was given the wrong date, so my vote would be to get him confirmed if possible, since he was kind of given the runaround last time - at least, according to him.

is shared/round-robin email the only means we have for managing speakers? Seems useful to have a shared list with at least name, confirmation status, and meeting date, yes? tho'ts?

There are wiki areas on BALUG.
Could potentially make a page for tracking potential speakers/presenters, and dates they can't make, could or might be able to make, or have confirmed to make, etc.
Maybe a simple table matrix, rows with potential speakers/preseneters, columns with meeting dates (e.g. month no. in hexidecimal), and a key code for varous letters in the table, e.g.: C - Confirmed R - Reconfirmed P - Possibly can make (not confirmed) T - Tentative - will probably confirm, to be finalized N - can't make that date ? - unknown if available or not for that date

upon registering at the balug.org site, I got an error message--some api call problem. upon re-registering, I got a message that the email address ( jim@well.com ) was already registered. username jim.stockford email jim@well.com
my guess is that the original registration partially succeeded, enough to queer subsequent tries but not enough for success.

Jim Stockford, et. al.,
Jim - I just separately sent you a password. That should work for you being able to login.
I tried and also got results like Jim, so looks like at least the self-registration is at least partially broken (seems it does part of the registration, fails, and doesn't e-mail the initial password - at least I tried what Jim did, got similar results, and haven't seen an initial password e-mail show up - at least yet).
Also, these are the errors I see it give with the self registration: Error! Called unknown function: Mailer_userapi_sendmessage() And then when trying again: Sorry! Please try again: this e-mail address is already registered Perhaps the hosting provider's done something to block it from sending e-mail as it's presently configured?

many thanks, michael.
yes, the errors you report are exactly those I got. i'm no longer holding my breath for email with initial password.
thanks for the password in your separate message.
I'll log in (hopefully) and look around, partly to see what policies are there: seems like a good thing to review--anyone up for re-evaluation? either way, then inspecting implementation seems useful. I'm happy to put in some hours on the web site or system or whatever.
