October meeting administrivia

For the October meeting, will we be able to meet in our regular spot, the 3rd Floor Banquet Facility: "The China Room", and have our video hook-up and adapter, and microphone set-up available? The September meeting was a bit awkward, as that room wasn't available to us then (they were doing some remodeling or something like that). We may have a fair to large(ish) turnout for the October meeting. I'd guestimate we'll easily take up 2 tables, probably 3, ... and maybe even 4 or more (more than 4 doesn't seem quite so probable to me, but if many to all the folks that have said they'd be interested and want to come and/or could/would find large numbers of folks that would be wanting to come, we could land in the 4+ table range).

Now that the announcement for next meeting has gone out, can someone tweak the BALUG web page a bit. Although I'd be flattered if someone thought: "Michael Paoli will be doing a presentation." would itself generate a big draw of interested folks, I'd guestimate most folks seeing that on the BALUG page would more likely wonder who or what is a "Michael Paoli" and what is the presentation on? Anyway, suitable suggested "briefest" and "compact" suggested text blurbs are available here: http://lists.balug.org/pipermail/balug-admin-balug.org/2005-September/00006… and also reproduced a bit further below. I was thinking "we" (one of us "announce" moderators) could send this out on the "announce" list ... anyone want to add/change anything before it goes out? If I don't hear otherwise and don't see it (or something mostly covering/resembling it) sent out within about 24 hrs. or so, I'd probably go ahead and send it out (might be at least somewhat preferable if someone else sends it, so I'm not announcing myself :-)). Anyway for the "announce" list item, I'm proposing (have drafted) what's shown below - use the line immediately above the first "cut" (8<--) line as the subject, and use everyting between, but not including the "cut" lines for the body of the message. Also, once the e-mail has gone out on the "announce" list (draft of which includes presentation details on the October meeting), short text blurbs suitable for the web site can also be found in: http://lists.balug.org/pipermail/balug-admin-balug.org/2005-September/00006… On the web site, there could also be suitable link(s) from such short text to the URL for the archive copy of the "announce" item that goes out on the "announce" list. The Digital Tipping Point is an open source documentary film project. "We are approaching a digital tipping point." "One documentary film, the Digital Tipping Point: the culture of freedom in cyberspace, will peer into the future to see how this change might come about, and what it means for humanity." So, ... just because a BALUG meeting doesn't indicate, or indicate reasonably well ahead of time that we've got a speaker/presentation, should not be taken as an indicator that we won't have an exciting, interesting meeting anyway - and possibly including speaker/presentation. And you're all announcing ... what? ;-) Could we please try and keep the "talk" traffic on the "talk" list <balug-talk-balug.org(a)lists.balug.org> lest we annoy and lose subscribers from the "announce" list - which should, at least in theory, be relatively low-volume, and mostly relatively important BALUG related announcements. Thanks. Also, suggestion for the BALUG list wranglers: Can we get the "announce" list moderated? Not that it gets horribly overused/abused when the "announce" list probably wound't be the optimal choice for a message to get out, but sometime stuff goes out on "announce" that can be rather annoying (e.g. overzealous recruiters/agencies sending out job announcements for positions that aren't related to LINUX and aren't in the Bay Area). Maybe just get those on the "admin" list, or some suitable pool of folks as moderators (so that we have "enough" moderators, so that things that should get passed along don't sit for *too* long). Anyway, maybe we can also talk more about this at today's BALUG meeting. Also, the "admin" list - I think I had suggested it before, but can we go ahead and open up the archives to the public (without requiring being on the subscriber list). Since folks could always access it with an e-mail address, I don't see a lot of "value add" by making one have to subscribe to read the archives. I think it would also be useful for the archives to be readable so search engines (e.g. Google) could search and index it, and folks could peruse and/or refer to it. I think I'd always made the point that stuff there isn't all that horribly hidden from the public, and hence stuff there should be readable by the public (if they're so inclined to read administrivia details and such for BALUG that may often not be all that exciting/interesting). Mail from balug-talk-balug.org comes in using "San Francisco Linux Users' Group" as the real name. Could someone change it to "Bay Area Linux Users' Group" please. "San Francisco Linux User's Group" is associated with sf-lug.org. thanks, jim

Ah, ... always more that could be tweaked/improved, but striking me as more critical among them: some/many of the links on the main page aren't functional, most notably including links for meeting location and directions to meeting, presently giving just: Module phpWiki not available. Hopefully that can be fixed soon, as the main page doesn't even include the address of meeting location (though for the resourceful, it gives the city, name of the restaurant (twice), and, for better or worse, does mention "downtown"). Probably not as critical as the above, but other things that caught my attention: the "For time and location details, please check the Calendar." text should probably get removed, so long as the calendar isn't available. The LVM related links are also similarly (Module phpWiki not available) broken. Those are old enough we could probably just pull that stuff off the page - or replace it with something much smaller and concise, e.g.: 2005-05-17: <A HREF="http://www.rawbw.com/~mp/linux/lvm/balug/">LVM presentation</A> Anyway, if you could attend to at least the more critical among these things at your earlies convenience, I'm sure many would appreciate that. Okay, I'm confirming I'll do the BALUG presentation 2005-10-18. We'll need the "VGA" type (DE15) --> NTSC video adapter again, as before, for our video hookup there. Also microphone/PA availability is strongly recommended. Blurbs/description/announcement, etc. I recommend these generally *not* go out until after our 2005-09-20 meeting, excepting possibly: o brief inclusion in announcement/reminder for 2005-09-20 BALUG meeting, o perhaps slight web site update(s) to indicate slight bit that we do have presentation/speaker lined up for 2005-10-18 BALUG, topic, and perhaps presenter o perhaps similar brief mention to other groups/contacts/LUGs/UGs, etc. Rationale: by not promoting it (much) before 2005-09-20 meeting, we hopefully avoid detracting (significantly) from the 2005-09-20 meeting - particularly if we may not have speaker/presentation for the 2005-09-20 meeting. And various recommended text blurbs - use the material between the cut (8<--) lines, excluding those lines themselves.
