Hi Dick and Larry and everyone, If there's no presenter scheduled yet for the January 17th meeting, could I give a talk on Conary and rBuilder Online? Conary is an open source software management and provisioning tool that applies new ideas from distributed configuration management tools such as GNU arch and monotone. Rather than concentrating on separate package files as RPM and dpkg do, Conary uses networked repositories containing a structured version hierarchy of all the files and organized sets of files in a distribution. http://wiki.conary.com/ rBuilder Online is a collaborative development environment that can be used to easily package open source software and produce complete distributions. http://www.rpath.com/ I came to both the September and October BALUG meetings on The Digital Tipping Point and shell programming respectively and found the topics interesting and the audience knowlegeable and enthusiastic about Linux. I'd love to be able to present on these couple of new and exciting technologies that I've worked with the past few months. Thanks, Xiaowen

Anyway, this is what I've drafted for the "announce" list ... anything else we should add? I'm thinking of sending this one out quite soon (like today or tomorrow) ... we could additionally send out a "reminder" announcement approximatey 7 to 5 days before the meeting itself. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ For our March 21, 2006 BALUG meeting, we have as guest presenter Tom Limoncelli, of Google, on: Time Management for System Administrators (and everyone else too) Whether you use Perl, Python or Ruby, whether you use Windows, Linux or Unix, all system administrators have a problem with time management. Users interrupt you constantly with requests, your managers want you to get long-term projects done but flood you with requests for quick- fixed, and the machines you manage just never behave, causing problems at the most inopportune moments. Xavier - could you (or someone) get the BALUG web site updated with information about our program for the March 21st meeting - looks like we should have Tom Limoncelli lined up for that (details further below, including title of talk, etc.). I'll draft an item to go out on the "announce" list noting the speaker/program for the 21st, and hopefully get that out fairly soon (like this week - preferably within the next couple days or so). If there's anything anyone thinks should be added/included for that item to go out on "announce" (e.g. other BALUG 'newsworthy' items of note), just drop a note to the "admin" list (balug-admin(a)lists.balug.org) and I'll probably make a suitable inclusion of it. got laser pointers

I was in Walgreens, coincidentally, this A.M. I picked us up a pair of the 2 for $5.00 laser pointers. I still have separate receipt for them and such, in case we accidentally duplicated efforts, or they should be returned for any reason. $5.43, including tax. They look quite generic (no brand name to be found?). They've got a UPC code: 676758500224

I'm guessing that posting permissions for balug-announce need to be restricted, as my understanding is that it's supposed to be a low-traffic place for announcements of BALUG and similar _events_ by authorised parties, only. I do not have the listadmin password for balug-announce. Someone else will have to fix this. I recommend changing the listwide setting that makes it a moderated mailing list (to turn on moderation), and then flipping on the Moderated bit for almost all subscribers in the subscribers roster. The Moderated flag should be left turned off for people we trust to send only appropriate announcements.
