(including the "admin" list for a bit broader exposure/feedback)
Note also that some of the SF-LUG* boxen stuff will likely go through
some reshuffling in the coming week(s) ("old" box being deprecated /
phased out, "new" box being built/configured and phased in). I'll try
to keep the disruptions as minimal as feasible (and send out relevant
details at / around / slightly/reasonably before the appropriate
time(s)).
*doesn't impact sf-lug.org or its listserver, but does impact other
SF-LUG systems (and BALUG stuff that's hosted thereupon).

Ah, ... I thought you might like that one :-) ... lots more to add, but
it's a start.

Understood (I'm working on getting at least a bit more unswamped).

Hi Guys:
A recruiter for IPsoft recently contacted me about a couple of open
SysAdmin positions. I guess he got my name from one of the LUG mailing
lists. What do you guys think about offering him 4 minutes to present 2
featured jobs on the projector prior to the Talk in exchange for buying
say $250 worth beer at the event? I'll ask him to pay the Four Seas in
cash directly and have them put out a selection of bottled beer in ice. I
figure that will be 50 to 75 beers depending on what the Four Seas charges
for each beer, ie, about 1 per person depending on exactly how many people
show up.
Thoughts?

Good Day Andrew,
I recently joined the San Francisco User Group and was wondering if you
could help me out. As you can see IPsoft is not a recruiting firm or
staffing agency. I am an internal recruiter for the company in the US and
we are launching our first office in San Francisco. I was wondering if
you could help me out with a referral or two.
We are actively seeking two SOLID Level 2 or Level 3 Linux System
Administrators to join our newly created office. Do you know anyone who
would be interested in working for our company? We are currently in
hyper-growth phase competing with companies such as Verizon Business, IBM
and EDS. Our autonomic systems have set an unprecedented bench mark in
the industry and Fortune 1000 companies globally are turning to us for
their solutions.
I have attached other position to this email should you know anyone else.
Please let me know if you have any questions and look forward to hearing
from you. Thank you!
Best,
Dustin

Hi BALUG Volunteers:
What do you guys think about making a 2nd BALUG announcement that reminds
folks of Bruce Peren's talk next week on high volume LUG lists in the
area? Specifically, I am thinking that the talk lists of ACCU, SVLUG,
SFLUG and BayPiggies are high enough volume that a reminder may be seen as
helpful (or at a minimum not bother folks). Does anyone else have any
input here?

I recently confirmed Eric Allman's April speaking slot at BALUG. He wrote
back asking the following...
"Was there anything in particular you wanted me to talk about? My
main gig these days has been DKIM (Email Authentication), but that's
caused me to be thinking some about identity on the Internet. That's
a lot more arm-wavy though."
Does anyone have any questions for topics that they'd like to see Eric
cover during his talk?

So, we can expect you to be doing a technical presentation at an upcoming
BALUG meeting? I didn't realize you'd already been confirmed for such.
Per list policy:
"Linux jobs postings are welcome and allowed only from those recently having
given a technical presentation at a BALUG meeting (or confirmed to do so at an
upcoming BALUG meeting)"
http://lists.balug.org/listinfo.cgi/balug-talk-balug.org
Or in other words:
Can I post a job?
Not generally, but for starters, see:
http://lists.balug.org/listinfo.cgi/balug-talk-balug.org
At least at the present time, the list noted above is the only place BALUG has
for listing any job postings - and even then, only under the conditions noted as
policy for that list.
You're quite welcome to come to BALUG meeting(s) and make a short announcement
about position(s) you're trying to fill, and hand your contact information out
to whomever may be interested (and of course you can also meet folks before the
meeting starts, talk with folks over dinner before any scheduled talk starts,
and potentially meet and talk with folks after the meeting too).
User Groups can be great resources for networking with folks, but many/most of
them have policies against, or significantly restricting listing of job
postings, or have relegated the area(s) where job postings are allowed to
list(s) or area(s) specifically designated for such, or only allow such listings
after they're moderated/approved.

I just got a note from Mark Shuttleworth's assistant that he needs to
change the date from Monday 3/24 to Tuesday 3/25. I told her this was
fine. However, the timing is unfortunate because I mentioned the 3/24
date in several forum postings that I made last night.

I have confirmed Mike Linksvayer, CTO, Creative Commons as the BALUG
speaker for July.
Also, please note that we have Guido van Rossum (python) and Ian Murdock
(debian) as speakers who have committed to 2008 dates TBD.

Hi BALUG Volunteers:
I have an offer from Mark Shuttleworth of Ubuntu/Cannonical to speak at
BALUG on in March. However, he could only make March 24th, which is not
our regularly scheduled meeting date. I believe Mark is one of the most
influential people in F/OSS and therefore an excellent speaker. I
strongly believe that we should take him up on his offer. I'm going to
default to accepting Mark Shuttleworth on 3/24 if I don't hear anything
back otherwise.
I also cleaned up the speakers wiki a little bit:

O'Reilly just sent me 5 copies of Eric S. Raymond's book "The Cathedral &
The Bazaar" to give away at BALUG. I'm going to ask Eric to autograph
them and then we should give them away at the meeting.
