Dick Verna recieved a call this evening saying our usuall meeting room will not be available for the October meeting. We can meet in the main dining area. I know may/will have impact on A/V use I hope will still work without the projector. I think can still have a good meeting and see those who make it to the meeting! Oct. 18, 2005 meeting: Shell Programming; ... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ BALUG 2005-10-18 meeting presentation: Shell Programming, by Michael Paoli This presentation promises to be a quite useful, informative, interesting, well referenced and fast introduction to Bourne (sh) and compatible [Korn (ksh), POSIX, Bash (bash), ash, etc.] shells. The presentation will cover a fast, but thorough tour of the shell and shell programming. It will cover all the way from why one would want to learn shell, why start with Bourne, etc., how to compactly learn it, through and including most key features of shell programming, and some key differences and caveats among the shells, and a collection of references to help round out leaning about shell programming. About Michael Paoli, our presenter for this event: Michael Paoli has been doing UNIX systems administration for well over a decade, been doing LINUX systems administration for over 7 years, and has been using and programming Bourne and compatible shells (bash, etc.) since even earlier than all that. He's also done well received classes/labs/presentations before, including topics of security, shells and Logical Volume Manager (LVM). BALUG 2005-10-18 meeting presentation: Shell Programming, by Michael Paoli This presentation promises to be a quite useful, informative, interesting, well referenced and fast introduction to Bourne (sh) and compatible [Korn (ksh), POSIX, Bash (bash), ash, etc.] shells. The presentation will cover a fast, but thorough tour of the shell and shell programming. It will cover all the way from why one would want to learn shell, why start with Bourne, etc., how to compactly learn it, through and including most key features of shell programming, and some key differences and caveats among the shells, and a collection of references to help round out leaning about shell programming. The Digital Tipping Point is an open source documentary film project. "We are approaching a digital tipping point." "One documentary film, the Digital Tipping Point: the culture of freedom in cyberspace, will peer into the future to see how this change might come about, and what it means for humanity." So, ... just because a BALUG meeting doesn't indicate, or indicate reasonably well ahead of time that we've got a speaker/presentation, should not be taken as an indicator that we won't have an exciting, interesting meeting anyway - and possibly including speaker/presentation. The BALUG "admin" <balug-admin-balug.org(a)lists.balug.org.> archives are now open to the public (so one can read/browse those without having to be a subscriber, search engines can index them, etc.) For the interested, curious, and/or bored, the "admin" list is focused more towards the "internal business" and administrivia of BALUG. If you would like to help out BALUG, or might want to get some ideas on wherewe could use some assistance or more volunteerism, that list (and/or its archives) can often be a good place to start. missing September meeting

Dick Verna just called me and his wife is sick and needs to be care for her. That means the projector will not be at meeting. A speaker had said would be at meeting but the ball was dropped so not certain if will be at meeting. I could pickup the projector but that will not help much as I will not be driving to meeting, Dick provides my transportation to meeting. I have the time just not the transportation. Tuesday, June 21st, 2005, starting at 6:30 P.M. PST8PDT One evening, so much BALUG excitement at one location :-) 6:30 P.M. PGP/GPG keysigning begins (details further below) 7:00 P.M. dinner and featured speaker Moshe Bar, CTO of XenSource, Open Source vereran and openMosix Project leader At 7:00 P.M., we move to our assemblage for dinner ($10.00 per person for dinner, dinner starts promptly at 7:10 P.M.), and will have as our featured speaker Moshe Bar, CTO of XenSource, Open Source vereran and openMosix Project leader. Prior to XenSource, Bar co-founded Qlusters, Inc., where he served as CTO, leading the company's technology and product strategy. Previously, Moshe was VP, ERP implementations, at Baan Europe. He is the author of three books on Linux internals and Open Source development tools. Abstract: Virtualization is a new and hot item to the world of Linux and Windows. There have been, however, virtualization technologies for over 40 years starting with the IBM emulators for mainframes and later with CP67 and VM virtualizing operating systems. Preceding that, starting at 6:30 P.M. BALUG will have a PGP/GPG keysigning event. As keysigning won't be possible during most of the later part of the BALUG meeting (as we have speaker/presentation), please try to make it as close to 6:30 P.M. as possible if you're interested in the keysigning. If you're interested in having your key signed, bring government issued photo ID (e.g. drivers license or passport, etc.) and for your key(s), key ID and key fingerprint (preferably on little slips of paper). For signing other folks keys, you'll probably want to make some notes (e.g. bring a writing implement). Placing your key(s) on the biglumber event keyring for this event: https://www.biglumber.com/x/web?ev=77348 (preferably at least several hours ahead of time if possible) can also help facilitate ease of keysigning and key exchange. Even if you're not interested the keysigning itself, as always, you're welcome to join us starting as early as 6:30 P.M.
