excellent tool to power large scale data mining and analysis of P2P
networks. Finally, we will present some results of the quantitive
analysis of BitTorrent conducted by the Peer-to-Peer Research
Institute.

Howdy Folks:
BALUG is very proud to host Andrew Morton as our speaker on Tuesday, June
24th. (PLEASE NOTE: this is not our regular meeting date... There will be
NO MEETING on the 3rd Tuesday) Andrew Morton is a lead linux kernel

RSVPs are really important to BALUG, but don't worry we won't turn you

Balug on Tuesday will host Thomas Belote, who is a new speaker. Tom is a
software developer at Untangle and a CS grad student at San Jose State.
Tom will be talking about wireless mesh networking. As a grad student at
SJSU, Thomas has worked on Wireless Mesh Networking and Mobile Ad Hoc
Networking. His talk will compare solutions like OLSR and Microsoft's semi
open source Mesh Connectivity Layer (that doesn't run on Linux). He will
discuss why WDS is not sufficient and a mesh protocol is needed, and
discuss the lack of openness thus far in 802.11s even though it is
included in the OLPC, as well as security issues and implications.

For our 2008-04-15 meeting we are proud to present:
Eric Allman, on: Email Evolving
Internet email is in a process of rapid evolution. Besides the obvious
things, such as spam and malware, many other technology trends are
having an impact. These include mobile devices, new messaging
technologies, social networking, changing legal requirements, the rise
of Software as a Service and Service Oriented Architectures, and an
unstable underpinning of the network itself. Not surprisingly, many of
these same forces do or will affect other parts of the network. This
talk will describe these evolutionary pressures, point out some of the
unexpected consequences of our attempts to adapt to these pressures,
and make some dire predictions for the future. Generous time will be
allotted to Q&A.
Eric Allman[1] created and authored sendmail[2], spearheads
sendmail.org[3], and is Chief Science Officer[4] and co-founder of
Sendmail, Inc.[5] Sendmail remains the most popular mail transfer
agent (MTA) on the Internet. Eric co-authored the draft specification
for DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM)[6]. Among his work and
contributions, Eric was also Chief Programmer on the INGRES Relational
Database Management System and an early contributor to Berkeley UNIX,
authoring syslog, tset, the troff -me macros, and trek in addition to
sendmail.

The (first?) Installfest for Schools[11] was held 2008-03-01, and was a
highly successful event. Be sure to check out the new
LWN.net article[12] covering the event. With a combined community
effort by Alameda County Computer Resource Center (ACCRC)[13],
Untangle[14], additional volunteers/supporters/donors/contributors -
including also many User Groups (among them
San Francisco Linux Users' Group (SF-LUG)[15] and
Bay Area Linux Users Group (BALUG)[16][17]), and a quite large number of
volunteers (over 100 volunteers total among four locations), several
hundred computers were built and configured with Ubuntu and additional
free software for donation to schools. Some additional
